Community Partnerships
RichmondBUILD
Richmond BUILD Pre-apprenticeship Construction Skills & Solar Installation Training program was developed to create employment and career opportunities for Richmond residents and also to implement a strategy for reducing violence in our community. Richmond BUILD was established in May 2007 and has quickly become a model of effective and broad public/private partnership that is focused on developing talent and skills in the high wage construction and renewable energy fields.
Contra Costa College links with this program to provide additional training for graduates in other related career fields.

Business Development Center
The Business Development Center in partnership with CCC Economic Development Department offered a class on "How to Start a Restaurant or Food Service Business" in Contra Costa County. The college offered the Culinary Arts class with well known restaurateurs as guest speakers and the BDC provided the know-how on getting the necessary business loans, locations and site selection advice as well as the expertise for professional kitchen design and equipment. This partnership will serve 35 clients to start and we expect the classes to grow next semester. Seventeen clients just graduated from the program and are on their way to success.

Richmond Works
College representatives serve on the various committees sponsored by the local WIA (Richmond Works). The College also has partnered with the agency to offer training for eligible Richmond residents.

World One Music Festival
The College, in collaboration with KECG radio, has helped to sponsor this 4th of July music festival at Castro Park in El Cerrito, CA.

City of San Pablo
The City of San Pablo and the College entered into an agreement to remodel the soccer field. The project has been completed. The city also installed lights for night soccer games. Bleachers for spectators will be installed in the near future.

North Richmond Neighborhood House
Several joint programs have been conducted with this agency, including world premiere showing of the made-for-TV movie entitled, "Redemption."

West County Detention Center
The College has been making regular outreach visits to the Center to recruit potential students as they are being paroled. Workshops on financial aid, EOPS and other services have been provided for the inmates.

Richmond and El Sobrante Chambers of Commerce
Members of the College serve on the boards of Chambers of Commerce and have worked closely in developing a strong relationship between the College and the Chambers over the years.

Contra Costa Child Care Council
The Child Development Department has worked with the Council on issues and activities related to serving the child care needs of the County. A member of the department has served on the board of the Council.

Bay Area Rescue Mission
The College has worked with the Mission to design and offer training courses for the men involved in the recovery program. Students have taken auto mechanics and culinary arts courses at the College.

Crescent Park Family Resource Center
College representatives have been working with staff from the agency to develop joint classes and programs for residents of the Crescent Park subsidized housing complex.

Doctor’s Medical Center – Pinole Campus (Tenet)
They provide lab space and equipment for students in the Nursing Program.

This collaboration has been successful in creating courses in vocational education for clients of this agency. A very successful certified nursing assistant program and selected automotive training have been offered.

Alta Bates Hospital, Berkeley; CCC Regional Medical Center; Children’s Hospital, Oakland; Doctor’s Medical Center, San Pablo; Herrick Medical Center, Berkeley; John Muir Medical Center, Concord; Kaiser, Walnut Creek and Oakland; Martinez Veterans Care Facility
Contra Costa College uses these medical facilities for clinical rotations of our nursing and health science students.

Catholic Charities of the East Bay This collaboration with the College offers academic support to non-native English speakers who are interested in becoming Early Childhood professionals. The program provides students with financial assistance for books, tuition, cash incentives, job preparation, placement and support.

Kaiser Permanente Foundation
For many years the Foundation has gifted the Nursing program funds to purchase supplies, equipment and this year an extra clinical lab instructor.

The partnership with John Muir has resulted in the hospital donating a full-time clinical instructor for the Nursing Program for the last three years.

Women’s History Annual Observance
Contra Costa College and the local chapter of the Association of American University Women host an annual celebration honoring a woman from each of the five cities and five unincorporated areas we serve.

California Shakespeare Festival
We collaborate with U.C. Berkeley to teach a summer Shakespeare drama acting class filled with a diverse student population of all ages and experience. This class culminates in a performance at the end of summer. This has been a successful collaboration for more than 15 years.

Clorox and Chevron/Texaco
Researchers from Clorox and Chevron/Texaco are MESA’s fall 2003 Industry Board members. Contra Costa College’s CSE-MESA students have received summer internship placements at Clorox and Chevron.

Richmond Police Activities League Computer Center
Members from the Richmond community may receive hands-on experience and instructions on how to use a computer from Police Activities League Computer Center in Richmond. Contra Costa College’s CSE-MESA students are tutors at the Center.

Chevron Training Academy and East Bay Municipal Utility District
The college is in the process of working with both Chevron and EBMUD to develop some pre-assessment services for them to assist them with future hires that have completed specified courses here at the college and are interested in a career with these companies.

WCCUSD-School to Career
We are currently working with the WCCUSD School-to-Career unit to expand our current articulation agreements. This is the main focus of our Tech Prep Grant this year.

Career Technical Education Counselor in All Seven Feeder High Schools
Funded by VTEA, for the last five years, we have had a vocational counselor with set hours in the career centers at Pinole Valley, Hercules, Richmond, Kennedy, El Cerrito, DeAnza, and John Swett. The counselor puts on vocational workshops, assists with vocational educational plans for those planning to attend Contra Costa College, and participates in many school activities and acts as a liaison between our faculty and the local high school.

Career Technical Education Counselor at San Pablo One Stop Center
This is a partnership funded through the college's VTEA Grant (Vocational and Technical Education Act) to provide vocational career counseling and other services to the clients there to facilitate their efforts to be Contra Costa College students. This partnership has been in effect for the last two years and has been responsible for increasing college enrollment and assisting WIA clients to get the job training skills they need to get employed.

Contra Costa Business/Education Collaborative and CCC
This partnership is designed to work together on "industry specific" workforce development initiatives such as biotechnology, manufacturing and construction apprenticeship programs in the high schools in order to link these careers to community college training.

K-12 Partnerships
School Reform Leadership Team
El Cerrito High School is participating in the statewide initiative of school reform. The college has a representative on the Community Advisory Committee and is helping to shape the design of the school’s curriculum to meet the demands of the 21st century.

Performing Arts Academy
Pinole Valley High School has an academy, which is designed to foster the development of students interested in the performing arts. Staff members from the college serve on the Community Advisory Board for the academy.

Teacher Training Workshops with WCCUSD
Faculty from the College has been working with single-subject credential aspirants to assist them in preparing for the state test in their respective subjects. Workshops are offered on Saturday mornings and are in the subject areas of English, Mathematics and Biology. Additional projects are being discussed with the WCCUSD and CSU-Hayward to assist these high school teachers to meet the state credential requirements.

Richmond Youth Works/WCCUSD Project
City of Richmond Youth Works has established an afternoon tutoring program for at-risk youth. Students are referred by the local high schools and enrolled in academic skills, ESL and a graphics class. In addition, the college is working with YouthWorks to develop the Summer Youth Employment Program.

High School Choir Competition
The Music Department has sponsored an annual high school choir competition. All the local high schools have been represented at this event. It has grown each year it has been held and has become one of the premier competitions in the area.

Richmond Lions Club Student Speakers Contest
For the past eight years, the College, WCCUSD and the Richmond Lions Club have sponsored the Lion’s Club Annual Student Speakers Contest. Students from local high schools participate and faculty from the College serves as judges.

Martin Luther King Day Celebration The college in conjunction with the WCCUSD has sponsored an annual King Day Celebration at the Knox Center for the Performing Arts. More than 100 students from local schools participate in the program.

WCCUSD Science Fair
Contra Costa College is the host of the annual Science Fair sponsored by the WCCUSD. Students from all over the district bring their projects and display them at the college for one week.

WCCUSD Transition Program This model program is designed to transition mentally challenged students to age-appropriate activities. Students are 18 years or older. They take adaptive P.E. and selected skills courses at the College.

CRUISE (Creating Respect and Unity in Science Education)
In collaboration with WCCUSD's middle school and high school teachers, Contra Costa College's CSE-MESA alumni and students are brining their science exhibits and demonstrations to classrooms to excite students about science and inform them of the benefits of attending college and the different college systems in California.

Metas
Metas is the Spanish word for goals. It is an outreach program at CCC that focuses on helping junior high and high school students to achieve their personal, educational career goals. Metas builds a network of support for students through a unique instructional and tutoring program, as well as parent involvement. Over sixty students come to meet on campus every other Saturday.

College for Kids
This is an annual CCC program to provide students in our community with an enjoyable and challenging summer learning experience. CFK classes are offered for enrichment only. Upon successful completion of class, students are awarded a certificate of completion.

After School Mathematics Tutoring with Richmond High School’s Athletic Department
Contra Costa College’s CSE-MESA students tutor Richmond High School athletes in mathematics and better prepare them for the exit exam.

Contra Costa College staff volunteers to read to students at the local elementary schools every year on Dr. Seuss’ birthday, March 3rd.

West Contra Costa Unified School District’s Job Shadow Day
Contra Costa College volunteers to participate in WCCUSD’s annual ground hog job shadow day where employees offer their mornings and/or afternoons for three days during February for local K-12 students to come to the campus and job shadow our employees.

Students from the Center for Science Excellence are providing tutorial assistance for middle school students at Helms.

UC Berkeley/Lawrence Hall of Science
The LHS is sponsoring a NSF funded tutoring program in science and mathematics at Contra Costa College. Students from local high schools are participating in this program.

Yosemite Institute/City of Richmond
This innovative project is designed to expose students from the WCCUSD to the great natural resource, Yosemite National park. The College jointly sponsored a field trip to the park and is working to develop other collaborations.

College & University Partnerships
CSU, East Bay Degree Completion Program
As an extension of the PACE and Weekend College Program, the College has collaborated with California State University East Bay to offer B.A. degree completion programs on the campus. The program allows CCC students and residents of West Contra Costa County to have access to baccalaureate degree program in the West County area at times that accommodate the working adult.

University of California at Berkeley’s Biology Transfer Consortium (BTC)
Biology and chemistry faculty are members of the BTC steering committee. Through this collaboration, selected science and engineering students at CCC receive paid summer internships at UC Berkeley and attend a course during the fall or spring semester to learn about the educational expectations of the University of California professors and the study skills necessary to be successful at a U.C.

CSU East Bay Internship Liaison
Contra Costa College’s CSE-MESA mentors work collaboratively with CSU East Bay’s faculty and coordinator to arrange field trips to CSU Hayward’s science department. This partnership has also established science, mathematics, computer science and engineering research internships for Contra Costa College’s CSE-MESA students at CSU Hayward.

UC Davis’ MURPPS (Mentorships for Undergraduate Research Participants in the Physical and Mathematical Sciences) Internship Liaison
Contra Costa College’s CSE-MESA mentors work collaboratively with MURPP’s director, staff and faculty at UC Davis to organize field trips to UC Davis. Both programs also work together to establish science, mathematics, computer science and engineering research internships for Contra Costa College’s CSE-MESA students at UC Davis. These interactions help to facilitate a smooth transition for Contra Costa College students transferring to UC Davis.

Grants
Career Technical Education Grant:
The primary function of this grant, which is Perkins funded under the new Carl D. Perkins 2008-2012 Act, is to work with the CTE (vocational) programs here at the college to help them provide the most comprehensive and current education and training to develop a well prepared workforce. The funding supports the continued growth, expansion and improvement of these programs and the development of new technical training programs for which there is demand in the workforce.

Tech Prep Grant
The primary focus of the grant is to expand focused projects at local high schools in partnership with Contra Costa College. This year, the primary focus of the grant is to expand the number of formal articulation agreements between our vocational programs and the programs at the local high schools, including the many high school academies. Several faculty meetings have taken place and additional informational workshops for counselors, students and parents are planned.

Partnership Grants
C5CTE Contra Costa Community College District Tech Prep Collaborative Grant
This grant is a partnership of the three community colleges of Contra Costa County, Contra Costa County Regional Occupational Programs, Contra Costa County Office of Education, Contra Costa County Education Collaborative, Contra Costa County Adult Education, West Contra Costa Unified School District as well as a number of other important consultants and agencies involved in education in the county. We have all formed this collaborative which is officially acknowledged by the State Chancellor’s office and have applied for a number of large grants that are focused on the three college campuses, at local middle schools and high schools in the area to address preparing young people for the college training needed to obtain a successful career. Adams Middle School and Helms Middle School are working with the college that provides career exploration activities to all the 7th and 8th grade students in both schools.

Tech Prep Demonstration Grant
This grant is designed to add two successful career technical education tracks for the Middle College students that currently can only transfer. The tracks are Biotechnology and Administration of Justice (with a Forensics certificate. Both of these tracks will lead to employment and allow students to earn a good income in these fields and continue on with pursuing their BA/BS degree.

East Bay Career Advancement Academy
This grant is working with the Peralta Community College District in partnership with the Contra Costa Community College District. All seven campuses offer small learning community preparation programs for various career sectors. The programs include a contextualized English class, a contextualized math class and a Career Prep (career overview) that includes the soft skills necessary for success in that career sector. Contra Costa College is offering two cohorts in the Spring: One is for students interested in entering the Construction industry (with a Solar Technology option) and the other cohort is for students interested in entering the field of Automotive Technology.

A new AS degree program has been approved by the Curriculum Instruction Committee and will be presented to the BACCC group early in 2006 then on to the State Chancellor’s Office for final program approval.

Pre-Construction Training Skills Program
At the request of many entities in the community including, Richmond YouthBuild, Richmond Workforce Investment Board and Youth Council, 4 of our feeder high schools with construction academies, San Pablo local businesses, and rotary and chamber members and construction unions, we are currently developing a bridge program that will prepare students to enter the construction industry. This program will include math for construction; report writing for careers in construction and life skills. This will be a 12-unit bridge program.
